5 Things to Read: Weeks of September 23 & 30
Culinary Class Wars, Chappell Roan controversy, and British sardonicism.
One quick note: I’ll be moving “5 Things to Read” to a biweekly cadence moving forward because life can be a lot and I’ll be able to send over only the best of the best from the past two weeks to your inbox.
Readers and the literary world are in a tizzy over Sally Rooney’s latest book, Intermezzo, which I haven’t read yet but plan to as soon as I’m done reading the current book I’m on. A profile of the author with some boring quotes (like, “the older I get the more freedom I have to write about a greater range of life experiences.” Same?) but worth a read all the same.
There’s been some controversy over Chappell Roan’s refusal to endorse the Democratic Party. How much do celebrity endorsements of politicians really matter?
My latest TV obsession has been Culinary Class Wars, a Korean cooking competition show on Netflix in the style of Physical: 100. A look at the realities of the local dining industry in Korea.
A critique of the NYT Book Review.
A fun and of course sardonic interview with John Oliver about comedy, journalism, and rage.
